A Front Door of Your Own: Welcome to The Wood Court

Resident preparing a meal independently at The Wood Court Extra Care in North London

I want to start with a small moment, because most of what matters in care lives inside small moments.

A little while ago I was standing in a hallway with a lady in her eighties. Her family had spent months worrying that the only road left was a care home, and you could see that worry sitting on both their shoulders. Then she turned her own key in her own front door, walked into her own flat, and said, almost to herself, “Oh. It still feels like mine.” Her daughter welled up. I nearly did too.

That one sentence is why places like The Wood Court

matter so much to us, and it is really the whole point of extra care

What extra care actually means

There is a lot of confusing language in our world. Residential care, nursing homes, supported living, assisted living, extra care housing. Families come to us exhausted and none the wiser, so let me keep it plain.

Extra care means you have your own home. A proper flat, with your own front door, your own kitchen, your own things on the shelves. You hold your own tenancy and you pay your own bills, just as you always have, so you stay the master of your own front door. But unlike living alone, you are never actually on your own. There is a care and support team on site every single day, around the clock, ready the moment you need them. You keep your independence and your privacy, and you quietly let go of the fear that no one would come if you fell in the night.

That is the balance so many older people in North London are looking for and cannot find. They do not want to give up their whole life to feel safe. With extra care, and with The Wood Court in particular, they do not have to.

Why The Wood Court matters to us

Evergreen Care has been looking after people across North and North West London for more than ten years now, first in their own homes and then through our supported living services. In that time our teams have given well over a million hours of care. We know this community. We know the daughter who rings on her lunch break to check Mum ate breakfast. We know the son who lives two hours away and lies awake wondering. We know the person who is fiercely independent and would rather manage than “be a burden,” a phrase I wish we could delete from the English language.

The Wood Court, in Edgware, is our first extra care scheme, and stepping into it felt like the natural next chapter. It is a place where each resident has their own life and their own door, and where help is simply there, woven quietly into the day.

I want to be clear and open about how it works, because trust is built on plain speaking. The building itself and the tenancies belong to the housing provider, Peabody. What Evergreen Care brings is the care and the support, delivered hand in hand with them so that housing and care work as one for every resident. We do not run it alone and we would not want to. Good care is always a partnership, and this one lets each side do what it does best.

A day at The Wood Court

Let me paint it for you, because a list of features never tells you how a place feels.

Morning at The Wood Court is not a bell and a queue. It is your own kettle, your own radio, and a familiar carer who knows you take your tea strong and your tablets with a bit of toast. If you want company you wander down and find it. If you want a quiet morning with the paper, that is yours too. Nobody rushes you. Nobody talks over you.

Through the week there are gentle things happening if you fancy them. A coffee morning where the room fills up with chatter. A lunch club. A chair exercise session that leaves everyone pleasantly worn out and slightly competitive. And here is something we feel strongly about. Loneliness does not only live inside these walls, it lives all over our neighbourhoods, so our hope is to slowly open these activities up and invite the wider community in too, turning a coffee morning into something the whole area can share.

Underneath all of it, invisibly, is the reassurance that if something changes, if you feel poorly or frightened or simply lonely at two in the morning, a real person who knows you is minutes away. That is the quiet magic of it. The care is serious and professional, but it never announces itself. It just lets you get on with living.

For the families, the professionals, and everyone in between

Evergreen Care providing compassionate Extra Care support at The Wood Court

I know who reads these pages, so let me speak to you directly for a moment.

If you are a son, a daughter, a husband or a next of kin, I understand that you are probably tired and carrying more than you let on. Extra care is built to give you your peace of mind back, so you can go back to being a daughter instead of a full time carer and worrier.

If you are a social worker or a healthcare professional looking for the right placement, you will find a team that communicates properly, plans care with real thought, keeps clear records, and treats your client as a whole person rather than a set of needs on a form.

Our care is delivered in line with CQC standards and person-centred care principles.

And if you are an inspector or a commissioner reading this, I hope you will see what we care about most, which is dignity done consistently, on the ordinary Tuesday afternoons when nobody important is watching.

If you are younger and simply thinking ahead for a parent, thank you for looking early. It is the kindest thing you can do.

Now here is where you come in

We have decided to do something we have never done on this blog before. We are turning the comments on.

For a long time these posts have been a bit of a one way street, us talking, you reading. That never sat right with me, because care is not a monologue. It is a relationship. So from today, the space below this post is yours.

Wood Court Extra Care community in Edgware

Tell me what mattered when you were choosing care for someone you love. Tell me what you wish providers understood. If you have a question about extra care, or about The Wood Court itself, ask it here in the open, because I promise the answer will help someone else who is too shy to ask. If you are a professional with a view on what good looks like, I genuinely want to hear it.

I will read every comment myself, and I will reply. Not a call centre, not a template, me.

Come and see for yourself

You can read about extra care all day, but a place like The Wood Court only really makes sense when you stand in it. So this is my open invitation. If you are in North London and you are wondering whether there is a way for someone you love to stay independent and stay safe, come and say hello. Meet the team, see how the day flows, sit with a cup of tea and ask us the hard questions.

Many families also find practical advice and guidance through Age UK while exploring later-life care options.

You can find out more about The Wood Court and our extra care services on our website, or simply contact our team and speak to a real person on our team. No pressure, no hard sell, just an honest conversation about what would actually help.

Because in the end, everyone deserves what that lady in the hallway found. A front door of their own, and the quiet certainty that they are not facing any of it alone.

Warmly, The Evergreen Care team
